About the Show
The Chicago Printmaker’s Collaborative is pleased to present our Spring exhibition Existential Credit. The show will celebrate the prints produced by past and present interns of the CPC. We are excited to recognize the printmaking talent that has moved through the CPC over our many years of operation. The exhibition opened March 3rd , and there will be a closing party on May 5th from 6-8pm, with some of the artists briefly introducing their work.

When I stumbled upon this little gem of a printshop while traveling in Thailand, I was astounded by the quality, beauty, variety, and technical precision of the prints being made by the young cohort of artists working there under the exuberant leadership of C.A.P Director Kitikong Tilokwattanotai. The etchings made in the workshop had a distinctly "Thai" sensibility but with a very contemporary twist in the hands of these wonderful artists. My brief "appointment" stretched on throughout an entire afternoon and into the evening and culminated into this exhibition. I simply just had to share this exquisite work.Art has no barriers or borders and broadens our idea of what is possible. The great printmakers of the past 300 years easily outlive and transcend whoever happens to be king, dictator, or president. In light of recent political events in the U.S., the CPC renews its 2017 commitment to showcasing the best of International artists. Last April, 71 prints from Iran graced our walls. This summer, CPC hosted the winners of the International On Paper prize and showcased some of the finest prints from 28 different countries. And so now we visit Thailand. In December we'll wrap it all up like a present with the 28th Annual International Small Print Exhibition.

NOWRUZANE: An Exchange & Celebration of the Persian New Year with Iranian, Italian and CPC Artists
April 1 - June 3, 2017
Opening Reception April 1, 2017, 5-8pm
In Iran, the Persian New Year is called Nowruz; now meaning new, and ruz meaning day. Nowruz is about the renewal of nature, and for 3000 years, it has been celebrated at the exact moment of the vernal equinox. Iranians decorate using the seven symbols of life and vitality called Haftsin. These symbols crop up in many of the exhibited prints: Apple, Sumac, Vinegar, Garlic, Dried Oleaster, Samanu (sweet pudding made from wheat germ), and Sabzeh (wheat sprouts). We will have a Haftsin set up at the opening reception on April 1st.
The exhibit features over 130 mini prints by 96 CPC, Italian and Iranian printmakers. Multiples of these works are currently traveling and being exhibited together at the Chav Printmaking Studio in Tehran, as well as in Mashhad, Kermanshah and Kerman in Iran, at Spazio 74/b Milano Gallery in Milan, Italy and at the Sagene Kunstsmie in Oslo, Norway.
This touring exhibition is a collaboration between Chav Printmaking Studio (Iran), Milano Printmakers Associazione Culturale (Milan) and Chicago Printmakers Collaborative.
In light of recent political events in the U.S., the CPC thought it fitting to showcase the work of these wonderful Iranian and Italian printmakers and enlighten Chicagoans to their vibrant culture and customs. Art has no barriers nor borders and broadens our idea of what is possible. The great print works of the past 300 years have easily outlived and transcended whoever happened to be king, dictator, or president.
