Sequence of a Dream

Sequence of a Dream is a thematic exhibition which brings together the unique illustrative styles of Alberto Cruz, Kumi Obata, and Kouki Tsuritani. Working across the mediums of relief, etching, and mezzotint and drawing on different graphic traditions, each artist delves into the realm of visual storytelling, infusing their prints with captivating narratives and a delightful sense of play. 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Alberto Cruz was born in Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca, and earned a degree in Plastic Arts from the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca. His primary medium is printmaking, and he has presented three solo exhibitions in across Mexico, in addition to numerous group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Cruz’s artistic focus revolves around themes of childhood and innocence, reflected in his pure and uncomplicated artistic style. Through his enigmatic storytelling, each of his pieces unveils a world filled with limitless possibilities. Drawing on inspiration from children’s illustration, Cruz has crafted a unique and distinctive visual language.

Kumi Obata was Born in Kanagawa, Japan, and is currently based in Tokyo. She began working in intaglio beginning in 2000, and creates picture books, illustrations, and product development with her etchings. She has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Japan and internationally.

Kouki Tsuritani was born in 1967 in Tokyo, Japan. He received his Bachelor’s and MFA from Kanazawa College of Art in Japan where he studied oil painting and printmaking. He often works in three different types of printmaking: mezzotint, wood engraving, and photogravures. Tsuritani is known for detailed, imaginative compositions of people and humanlike creatures. He often creates calm, still scenes that present the characters in a minimalist setting. Tsuritani’s work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally and is included in several major collections.
